Almost all cities have nice parks and short walks in areas where urban and wild (or at least undeveloped) landscapes interface.

But the Bay Area has a lot of such lands and an abundance of trails on them/5(12). Hikes in the San Francisco Bay Area is the most comprehensive hiking guide to the area, featuring a variety of hikes for all energy levels.

But this guidebook has more extensive routes than most, including its companion volume, California Hiking which is co-authored by Ms. Brown and Tom Stienstra/5(27). When I later checked the online Bay Area Hiker, which describes about trails, I found several warnings and advice about hikes there, that were entirely lacking in Weintraub's book.

Next time I will rely on online bahiker, maintained by Jane Huber, who wrote "60 Hikes WIthin 60 Miles: San Francisco"/5(9). 2) Mt. Diablo. If you really want an intense workout, try your luck on a hike up Mt. Diablo in the East Bay, which is the highest peak in the Bay area at 3, feet.

There are tons of different. The Bay Area Ridge Trail, the Ecology Trail, and the Lovers’ Lane Trail are just a few examples of the trails that make some of the best walks in San Francisco. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the area, the Presidio is an old military fort spanning over two square miles that is now a National Historic Landmark and part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Head to Pacifica for a hike along the picturesque Sweeney Ridge. You’ll walk through history along the way, passing through where Portola first discovered the San Francisco Bay inas well as abandoned buildings from the s-era Nike missile base (now you know!).
